Roll out from your hotel and head north, soon ascending Fuffock Hill, the race’s highest point at 922 ft/281 m. Enjoy a brief pause at its summit before descending through the dark, needled trees. Later, arrive pink-cheeked back in Gatehouse of Fleet and enjoy lunch. Visit Crafty Distillery this afternoon, which excels in producing award-winning spirits. Small and modern, enjoy a tour and a tasting before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Stop for a picnic lunch on the shores of a rush-fringed loch, unclipping and sitting in the sunshine. An arrestingly beautiful part of England, the landscape is a medley of narrow, glaciated valleys, steep-sided, heather-cloaked mountains and rolling green fields crisscrossed by drystone walls. After the drive, enjoy an early lunch at a lovely farm shop and cafe, set amidst 155 acres of rolling countryside and home to a herd of over 200 alpacas and llamas. From here, set out for a beautiful afternoon ride through the heart of the national park, arriving in the pretty village of Ambleside and checking into your hotel. Commanding wonderful views across England’s largest lake, Windermere, it’s the perfect place to relax.

As the trail unfurls beyond your tyres, listen out for the electronic call of lapwings and the bubbling call of curlews. After lunch, ride through pretty villages as you loop back towards your lovely hotel and a well-earned post-ride drink.

Verdant green in the summer months, with sheep grazing on the steep hillsides, this will be a memorable part of your trip. Continue through the pretty village of Buttermere and along the eastern edge of Crummock Water. Finish your ride by taking the route less travelled through Whinlatter Forest, arriving back in Keswick with big smiles, rosy cheeks, and pleasantly tired legs.
