I call the Cairngorms home, where the land’s contours echo the shape of my soul and the mountains rest as if in a timeless slumber. Married to Morag, I have been a soldier, a sailor, a mountaineer, an explorer, a farmer and a fisherman—many lives, all leading me here.

Here, the pastoral and the bucolic merge effortlessly with the transcendent, weaving inspiration into the fabric of the everyday.

Favourite Place to Play

The multi-pitch sea cliff climbing is in Penwith, west Cornwall. Sun, sea, sand, steep well, protected beautiful golden granite, with a cream tea ice cream or pasty at the end.

Not a lot of People Know This

I recited Lear’s “Owl and the Pussycat” through the internal intercom to his armoured fighting vehicle crew while manoeuvring through an enemy minefield.
