Ancient History & Stunning Coastline

Explore the northern frontier of England on a Northumberland adventure holiday. Northumberland is the most rural and least densely-populated region in the country, and the landscapes are very diverse. It is home to two Areas of Outstanding beauty. The North Pennines in the south of the county is one of them, an area hallmarked by the beautiful heather moors. The second is Northumberland’s coast, which spans over 40 miles (64 km). Here you’ll find long stretches of deserted golden sand beaches known for their biodiversity. In the northwest of the county, it gets a bit more rugged and mountainous. This area is home to Northumberland National Park, Kielder Water & Forest Park and the Cheviot Hills.

As an area that has long been a frontier zone, Northumberland has an incredibly rich and complex history and heritage. History buffs can explore battlegrounds, various prehistoric sites and Roman fortifications, all within a short distance from each other. Northumberland is also peppered with imposing castles, cute market towns and relics from the industrial revolution. Both Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle are real showstoppers in their own right. Bamburgh Castle is incredibly picturesque, an impressive coastal fortress with a fascinating history. If you’re a Downton Abbey and/or Harry Potter fan, you may also recognise Alnwick Castle, with filming taking place within the grounds.

This welcoming region certainly leaves its mark on your memory and will call you back again and again.
