    Winter in the UK

Curious about the colder months in England and Wales? Picture frosty fields, snow-dusted fells, twinkling village lights, and plenty of hot, hearty food to warm you up.

    Simple Winter Magic

Winter in England and Wales is a quiet season that asks you to slow down. The farm fields and hedgerows sparkle with frost. Snow lightly dusts the higher peaks, and Christmas lights warm up the village streets. Along the coast, the winter swell turns a deep, dark blue. Layer up for nippy, wind-whipped walks across empty moors or quiet beaches entirely to earn the reward at the end. Nothing beats ducking into a local pub, stamping the cold from your boots, and thawing out by a roaring fire with a warm drink.

    Cotswolds Winter Morning

Most people would say that winter in England and Wales falls between December, January, and February, often stretching into both November and March depending on the year. These months feature the coldest and shortest days of the year. Although temperatures drop, the weather is generally pretty mild. It also varies based on exactly where you are in the UK. Southern coastal Cornwall experiences a very different winter from that of the craggy peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, the upland hills of the Pennines, or the varied shores of Pembrokeshire.

Does it Snow in England & Wales?

It certainly can, though snowfall varies widely from year to year. You’re most likely to see it in the north and at higher elevations. Places like the Pennines, the Lake District, and the Welsh peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia). will see dustings to dumps more commonly. Further south, snow is much less common and rarely sticks around. Down on the Cornish or Devonshire coasts, it’s a rare sight indeed.

What England and Wales do reliably offer in winter is frost. On a still, clear morning, cobwebs glitter, and puddles crack underfoot.

    Our holidays reviewed
    in your own words

I selected this tour because it provided the opportunity to combine a holiday in Scotland with an opportunity to also explore the Yorkshire Dales and Lakes. It was a very well designed tour, providing a good variety of landscapes and walking challenges. Staying two or more nights in each area allowed us to adjust the walking itinerary to allow for the changing weather conditions. Our guide Dave, the accommodation, food and additional touring experiences all combined to provide a wonderful experience. Cant wait to come back!
