What to Eat: Cycling Snacks in England

    Fuel Up in England

When you’re cycling through England’s rolling hills, ancient villages, and winding country lanes, or the rugged slopes and castle-rich regions of Wales, food goes beyond simply fuel – it becomes part of the adventure. Eating the right snacks while riding keeps your energy levels steady, your mood lifted, and your focus sharp. Snacks (and the rest of your meals, of course) are also a delicious way to tap into the local culture of England and Wales.

The smallest things can often make the biggest differences while on an English cycling tour. Choosing smart snacks means you’ll stay strong, satisfied, and ready to soak up every mile of the British countryside. Stopping for snacks also offers a convenient reason to take a break from the bike and enjoy the expansive views of England’s stunning countryside, storybook villages, and cultural gems along the way.

    Peanut Butter Clif Bars

The original energy bar, Clif Bars is a favourite among cyclists for good reason. Clif Bar’s Crunchy Peanut Butter version is savoury and satisfying. With roasted peanuts in every bite, a rich flavour that balances the sweet and savoury, and a good blend of carbs and protein, Clif Bars will keep you moving.

When to eat: Snack master Dan recommends them as ideal for mid-ride when you need something substantial. They are also great at the top of a hilly climb when you’re craving fullness but don’t want to slow down or delay the descent.

What makes them great in England: easy to pick up in many larger supermarkets or outdoor shops, so even if you forget to pack them, they’re easy to stock up on. The dense nut content helps on damp, cooler days because it gives sustained energy without sugar crashes.

Why cyclists like them: the mix of crunchy texture and slow-release energy makes them more satisfying than a gel-only snack, especially on longer days.

Check out their website for more info.

    OTE Bars

    OTE Bars

OTE Bars are built for endurance — light enough to carry without adding too much bulk, yet rich enough in flavour to keep you feeling fueled for your bike tour. Each OTE bar uses ingredients chosen to supply energy without weighing you down.

Flavours range from tangy fruit-based to nutty varieties, with some sweeter options to satisfy those of us with a significant sweet tooth. Dan recommends OTE bars as an ideal bike snack, and has carefully curated a delicious range of flavours available on all Wilderness England bike tours.

When to eat: They are perfect during long flat segments or rolling countryside. They are also a fabulous snack to kick off your day’s route, helping to top up your reserves.

Texture and taste notes: While softer than some bars, OTE bars have enough chewiness to feel satisfying but not gummy. Fruit bits or nuts add texture and flavour contrast (the fruit ones bring a slight tartness that’s refreshing for many cyclists).

Local tip: OTE is a UK-based brand, meaning you’ll likely find them in cafés geared towards more active patrons, outdoor shops, or even some local petrol stations — a good place to restock if you run out mid-tour.

    Veloforte Bars

    Veloforte bars

Veloforte bars are more than just fuel – they’re little gourmet energy bites. With ingredients like real berries, a variety of nuts, cocoa, sea salt, and even coffee – and minimal processing – Veloforte bars are the perfect on-the-go cycling snack. Which is why we provide these delicious snacks on all Wilderness England bike trips.

Dan especially loves the red berries & pistachios bar (commonly nicknamed “the red one”) — the tartness of berries paired with the creaminess of pistachios gives a satisfying flavour that doesn’t feel “just sweet.”

When to eat: Veloforte bars are wonderful as a treat in the afternoon or during a photo stop when you want something memorable. They also work well as a post-pedal snack to tide you over to dinner.

Why cyclists appreciate them: Despite being more gourmet, Veloforte bars have enough carbohydrates and healthy fats to aid endurance. They are not overly sugary, so they’re easier to digest.

Bonus in England: Veloforte bars are often available in boutique food shops, artisan cafés, and bike or sports shops across England — for bike lovers, they are nice souvenirs for fellow cyclists too.

    OTE Hydro Tabs (Electrolytes)

    OTE Hydro Tabs

Hydration isn’t just about water; it’s about replacing what you’re losing through sweat — salt, minerals, electrolytes. You might not think of electrolytes as a sack, but they are vital to your cycling nutrition.

OTE Hydro Tabs dissolve easily in water and help prevent cramps, fatigue, and dizziness that can unfortunately result from dehydration, especially when you’re pushing yourself on a difficult route, to the top of a big climb or riding in warmer conditions. With crisp and citric flavours like orange, pineapple, and blackcurrant, they are sweet and tasty enough to encourage you to keep drinking.

When to use: Great for consuming during hot rides, long stretches between cafés or water stops, pushing yourself beyond your usual activity level, and immediately after a tough climb or long descent. Also great when sweating heavily as they will help replenish your electrolytes. Ensure you have a post-ride drink to stay hydrated and healthy.

Taste and usability: Enjoy OTE Electrolyte’s light flavours combined with a touch of fizz. Stored in plastic tubes, they are easy to carry and don’t weigh you down, and tabs mean no bulky bottles or powders.

Local note: With your guide offering a consistent supply of fresh water in the support van to refill your reusable water bottle, these tabs make topping up easy and safe.

    High5 Recovery Protein Drink

After a full day of cycling, your muscles need more than rest — they need the right nutrients to repair. High5’s Recovery Drink is designed to provide you with that: a balanced ratio of protein and carbs, plus a dose of electrolytes. The texture is smooth, it mixes easily, and the sweetness is moderate, ensuring it gives you what you need.

When to drink: Ideally, drink it within 30 minutes after you finish your day’s cycle, or while stretching out or relaxing into dinner. As Dan reminds us, while on a multi-day cycling tour, High5 is great for post-workout recovery, allowing you to feel fresh for your next day’s ride.

Why it helps: This drink helps reduce soreness, replenish glycogen stores, and support muscle repair so you feel less tired and sore in the mornings.

England-specific tip: The drink’s portable powder versions mean you can get the mix in cafés if you have hot water. It’s also good for staying fresh for the next day’s ride in places with demanding terrain.

OGT bars bring something unique: high performance and high sustainability. Without single-use wrappers, these bars reduce waste on the trail — something that matters to us at Wilderness when riding through England’s protected landscapes. Their flavour profile tends toward the wholesome: grains, seeds, natural sweeteners, with enough richness to feel like you’re eating something carefully made.

When to use: While not provided on our group trips as part of the snack profile, OGT energy bars are great for personal use. They are also good on days when you want something lighter but still nourishing.

Texture and flavours: Often crunchy or chewy depending on which bar you select. Seed-heavy bars give a satisfying crunch, whereas the sweetness tends to come from fruits, honey or natural syrups rather than refined sugar.

Why it’s great here: England has so many recycling systems and environmental awareness, and at Wilderness England, we take sustainability seriously. Therefore, Dan advocates using wrapper-free options whenever possible to reduce your carbon footprint as much as possible.

Meet the Guest Co-Author: Dan Parker

Originally from mid-Wales, I spent most of my teenage years exploring the local crags, trails and rivers in search of new adventures. I have lived in the highlands for over a decade now, and I love exploring new remote regions of this beautiful country.

I am lucky enough to call Aviemore home with my young family, where I enjoy spending long days on the bike looking for singletrack gold.
