Solo Travel in England & Wales

Travelling solo with Wilderness England doesn’t mean exploring alone — it means joining a small group of like-minded travellers, all keen to explore England’s beautiful landscapes, rich history, and local traditions.

Solo travellers are warmly welcomed on all our small-group adventures — in fact, many of our guests choose to join us independently. Whether you’re drawn to one of our walking tours or one of our wildlife tours, a road cycling holiday or a cultural and heritage trip, all our small group tours strike the perfect balance between shared experience and time to unwind at your own pace.

Every small group trip is led by an experienced and passionate guide, so there’s no need to worry about accommodation, route-finding, transfers, or where to stop for the best cup of tea. Your guide will also provide invaluable local insight, sharing the stories, histories, and hidden details that shape England and Wales’s landscapes, characterful villages, and many ancient sites.

From the moment you join a trip to the moment you depart, you’ll be part of a friendly group of travellers as well as being looked after by a genuine, professional guide. That means all that’s left for you to do is relax and enjoy the adventure. Whether you’re a regular solo traveller or setting out on your own for the first time, we make solo travel seamless, enriching and wonderfully stress-free.

Going Solo on a Group Trip — Is It for Me?

Solo travel is for anyone who values the freedom to explore in a way that feels personal and rewarding. Many of our solo guests are in their 50s, 60s and beyond, and they join our trips for a range of reasons — whether it’s the independence of travelling on their own, the chance to meet like-minded people, or the ease of joining a trip planned by experts and led by locals.

Travelling solo on a small-group tour offers the ideal balance: the adventure of going somewhere new, the connection of shared experience, and the reassurance of expert support throughout. With most of our trips confirming with just two or three guests, you’ll never be travelling alone.

Whatever brings you to England, we’re here to help — from answering early questions to handling every detail of your trip and matching you with the experience that fits you best. Ready to start planning? Get in touch, and we’ll work with you to find your perfect adventure.

    Best Tours for Solo Travel

All of our group trips are perfectly suited to solo travellers, but if you’re looking for inspiration to start your journey, here are some of our favourite English adventures.

Hiking Hadrian’s Wall Path is a standout choice for solo walkers seeking a rich historical experience combined with breathtaking countryside views. Designated a national trail in 2003, this route offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman Britain, winding through rolling hills, rugged moorland, and peaceful villages. With all the logistics taken care of, you can focus on immersing yourself in the history and natural beauty along the way.

For those who want to explore at a gentler pace, our E-biking tour in Cornwall provides an excellent way to discover stunning coastal paths, charming fishing villages, and hidden coves without breaking a sweat. Cycling solo on these guided small-group tours means you’ll have the freedom to soak up the dramatic landscapes while also enjoying shared meals, expert support and local insights.

If you’re drawn to England’s cultural heritage and picturesque villages, our Lake District Culture and Heritage tour offers a perfect blend of landscapes, literature, and rural charm. Wander through honey-hued stone villages, visit historic market towns, and delve into the traditions and stories that shape this beloved region. With knowledgeable guides sharing local folklore and insider tips, this trip is an enriching experience that goes beyond the typical tourist trail.

Solo travellers who want to go off the beaten path might enjoy a trip to Wales – perhaps a wildlife spotting tour, or a chance to hike through Eryri (Snowdonia)?

Whatever activity you enjoy most, you’ll find a solo-friendly tour to match — simply follow your interests, and we’ll take care of the rest.

    Solo Travel FAQs

I'm a solo traveller, do I have to pay a single supplement? Read More

No problem at all. There is no supplement for solo travellers as long as you are happy to share a room with someone of the same gender. If you’d prefer to have your own room there will be a charge. This charge will be noted on both your itinerary and on the individual trip page, or feel free to contact us to confirm price when checking single room availability.

What do the room types mean? Read More

Single – A room for one person, available for an additional supplement and usually allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Double – A room for two people with one bed.

Twin – A room for two people with two separate beds.

Can I book a single room? Read More

Single rooms are offered on most of our trips but these are limited so are allocated on a first come first served basis. It’s no problem to book a single room as long as there is one available. Most single rooms do incur a single supplement, which you can find in the downloadable trip itinerary.

Will there be other solo travellers on my trip? Read More

It’s impossible to know in advance what the make-up of a particular trip will be but in general, the majority of people that join our group trips are solo travellers. This means that there most likely will be a few solo travellers on each trip. If you have questions about who you will be travelling with then give us a call and we can give you a quick overview.

I'm a solo traveller, can I book a self guided trip? Read More

We welcome solo travellers on our tours within our Self Drive Collection or Self Guided+ road cycling trips. However, unfortunately for safety reasons, we don’t offer self-guided trips for solo travellers. We have lots of solo-travellers on our small group trips, though, and you would be very welcome to join one of those.

How Does Solo Travel for Women Work? Read More

At Wilderness England, we’re proud to support and encourage solo female travel, with female solo travellers welcome on every tour. Whether you’re travelling for freedom, self-discovery, or simply a change of scene, our small-group tours offer a safe, empowering, and welcoming environment.

Led by expert guides—many of whom are inspiring women themselves—our trips strike the perfect balance between independence and connection. From inspiring hiking journeys to cultural tours and E-bike trips, our solo female guests find like-minded company and unforgettable experiences in some of England’s most beautiful and awe-inspiring landscapes.

You’ll only ever share a room with fellow travellers of the same gender, and most trips offer the option to pay a single supplement if one is available. Discuss your options with your friendly sales consultant for more info.

    Our holidays reviewed
    in your own words

This trip was amazing, we got to see so much of the 5 countries in so little time. The sites and locations that were mapped out were perfect. A rest day in Dublin is the perfect city to explore and find good food. The guides were knowledgeable and thoughtful, and made the trip very easy, all we had to do was bike and show up to dinner! Absolutely awesome experience.
