    Mini Bio

I’ve been fortunate to work in places of nature, grandeur, and tranquillity, in roles that introduce and connect people to wild places throughout the UK. This has included the Lake District and Australia with Outward Bound, Glen Etive with Venture Scotland, and throughout the UK with the John Muir Trust.

Having done a ‘big trip’ in my youth, I now opt for shorter forays in Scotland and abroad, most recently taking my teenage daughters to India, California, and Vietnam – adding another dimension to ‘adventure’. I’m a lapsed distance runner and immerse myself in the comedy, theatre, and culture of Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival every August.

    Favourite Place to Play

The North Lakes generally and Helvellyn and Blencathra specifically: a legacy of living here in the ’90s is a sense of being ‘hefted’ to the landscape. The views and witchcraft heritage of Pendle Hill are always a draw to my home town of Burnley, along with Turf Moor and its heady mix of joy and despair over decades of following the Clarets (Burnley F.C).

Not a lot of People Know This

I was Burnley’s under-14 table tennis doubles champion and was in a Mick Jagger video – not at the same time!

I’m at that point in my career where it’s hard to pin down what my experience is and what I do. Generalist covers it.

I have my own company for taking on projects as diverse as creating Urban Nature Maps of Edinburgh and Glasgow, creating a marketing campaign for Scottish Geology, and looking into how low use of nature spaces impacts health inequalities at Glasgow University. I’m also the Chief Executive of a small charity that supports young people’s participation in youth awards, with a focus on the role that nature and personal achievement can play in dealing with mental health difficulties. It’s a stimulating combination!

Wilderness Scotland/England trips are a special part of this mix, combining previous and current experience as an Outward Bound instructor, project manager, strategic thinker, problem sorter, and team leader.

What Fellow Travellers Say About Rob

As I said, Rob really *made* the trip. His sense of humor, communication style, obvious enjoyment of the group and the locations, and knowledge about the places we visited all make him an excellent tour leader.

Superb guide both in his knowledge of wildlife and the area with a good sense of humour in managing the group. A huge asset.
